Warning: if you come to my house, and it is dark outside and I don't know your coming, you will be met at the door with a loaded gun. (Sorry Daddy!) :)
Here is the story: My daddy had a funeral on Monday, so on his way home he stopped by our house, only I didn't know he was coming by (he thought my Mom had told me he was coming by, and she thought he was going to call me if he had the time to stop by). Anyway, Stephen was working until 8pm that night, so I was at home alone with the boys. I was sitting on the couch folding clothes, and I heard someone bang on the back door. The boys yelled "Daddy" and started to take off running. But I stopped them and said "no, Daddy isn't getting off until 8pm, it's not daddy. Stay where you are, and do not go near the backdoor". So I walked over to the wall there by the backdoor and yelled "Who is it?" but got no answer (or course the washer and dryer are both running, and they are right by the back door). So I yelled it again, and no answer. So I told the boys to stay put, and I ran and got the gun out of the safe, loaded it and had it ready. I then went back to that wall, and yelled as load as I could (since the washer and dryer were still running) "WHO IS IT?" Then I hear this "it's me" and I'm thinking "oh that helps!" haha...so I peak around the corner to look through the glass on the back door and saw my Daddy there. Whew! What a relief. After I let him in, I went and put the gun back in the safe and I was then shaking from head to toe from the adrenaline rush I guess. Scared me to death!!! All I could think was I knew it wasn't Stephen, and here we are in the middle of no-where, and I had babies to protect.
Afterwards it scared me even more though, thinking I had a loaded gun and it was just my daddy. Guess I've been watching/reading to many suspense filled stories! haha Good thing Stephen has taught me how to use my gun though, and how to keep it pointed down and never put your finger on the trigger until you are absolutely ready to shoot. Otherwise if something scares you and you jump you might accidentally pull the trigger.
So I told Stephen about all of this that night and he was cracking up laughing! He said I actually did everything right. I made sure my kids were back and safe, and then I actually loaded the weapon and had it ready in case I needed to use it. He then asked "did Toby bark?" I said "no, I guess that should have told me that it was someone safe huh." He said "No, Toby could have been the first victim". I said "Oh thanks a lot for giving me that to think about!" He said luckily I was smart and asked questions first. He then cracked up laughing again and said I bet your Dad calls you the next time he comes up to the backdoor though! haha :)
Stephen learned this a long time ago. Right after we got married. We lived on 15 acres of woods. One morning around 5am, he left for work, but got out to his truck and realized he left his keys and phone in the house. And keep in mind that he would come home from work and would find me sitting in the bed with a gun beside me, because I was scared to be out there by myself (we had heard stories of a possible marijuana patch on the land behind us). So anyway, he is thinking "how am I going to wake her up without scaring her to death?" If I knock on the window she will freak out, so I better knock on the door. So here he is banging on our front door, while standing off to the side, because he knows I will be coming to the door with a loaded shotgun. Sure enough, I wake up scared to death. Load my shotgun, and go to the front door. I get to the door and hear him yelling "It's Me, Kandy It's Me, Don't Shoot!" haha.. We both still get a good laugh out of this story.
So needless to say, if anyone ever breaks into my house and I am here, he will be shot...multiple times! :)
